Gregory Dean Hite, 69, of Pittsburg, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home on May 5, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly.
Greg was born on July 15, 1956, in Pittsburg to Darrel and Eloise Margaret (Stephens) Hite. He grew up in the Pittsburg area and graduated from Southeast High School. He later attended Pittsburg State University and graduated from the Diesel Technology program at North Central Kansas Technical College in Beloit, beginning a lifelong career defined by mechanical expertise and a dedicated work ethic.
On May 27, 1978, in Shawnee County, Topeka, KS, Greg was united in marriage to the love of his life, Beatrice Mowery. Together, Greg and Bea built a life centered on family, faith, and hard work, celebrating 49 years of a beautiful and happy marriage.
A master of his trade, Greg’s mechanical expertise was evident both in the industrial machinery he maintained throughout his career and in the farm and ranch he took such pride in creating. For Greg, his skills weren't just a job; they were the tools he used to build a lasting home and legacy for his family. He worked for many years with P&M Coal Company and List & Clark before eventually retiring from Crawford County. His colleagues knew him as a man with a great sense of humor and a strong work ethic.
Greg’s commitment to his community was evident through his many years of service. He served on the USD 247 school board for many years — a point of pride for him as he served on the board just as his father had. He was also a dedicated member of the Mirza Shrine, the Black Diamond #0247 Blue Lodge of Weir, and the Cherokee Methodist Church.
He will be remembered as a man of quiet strength, a steady provider, and a "Papaw" who cherished every moment spent with his grandkids. Whether he was working in his shop or enjoying a quiet evening at home, his family was his pride and joy.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice, of the home; two sons, Gregory Hite and his wife, Amelia (and their two children) of Tulsa, OK, and Nicholas Hite and his wife, Katelyn (and their three children) of Pittsburg; and his brother, Stuart Hite and his wife, Amy, of Pittsburg. His legacy lives on through his five beloved grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends who will miss his wisdom and humor.
Greg was preceded in death by his father, Darrel; his mother, Eloise; and his brothers, Steve Hite and Gary Hite.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Cherokee Cemetery with Kyle Rogers officiating. A celebration of life will follow the service at the Cherokee Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction of Brenner Mortuary.
